39. How to say hello in French

Say you're on the Metro and see a pretty girl. You'd like to strike up a conversation, but you're not sure how to get started. To start with, here's how to say hi:

But not this one. Get your own.

I'd like to talk to you about French greetings
so in the clinch you won't be unprepared.
There's several paths to go down in these meetings;
deciding which culls bon vivants from merde.

Bon jour!” (good day) can handle any setting.
It works no matter where or when you are.
But if night falls and on the town you're heading,
you're better served by uttering, “Bon soir.”

When saying hi to friends you use la bise
and touch your cheek to theirs, not quite a kiss.
It's fine to make that “mwah” sound if you please
But right, then left cheek's key for social bliss.

One final tip and then my lesson's through:
the most informal greeting's just,“Salut!”

  1. What if I want to give each cheek a xerbert? And WHY not the girl above?!

  2. When I was showing Megan a draft of this, she said, "No one says 'mwah.' Well, you do, but I thought that was just some weird twist you'd decided to put on it."
    What I meant wasn't actually saying mwah, I meant 'make that kissy sound', lightly, that's impossible to spell, so I just said mwah. And since you don't actually touch your lips to their cheek...actually, no. Go for it. I think it'd go over well. Try to record the event in some form.
