40. Creature of the Night

Today proved to be too hectic to come up with a sonnet I'm willing share ( I started one that doesn't warrant publishing yet). So here's one from the stacks.
I've got an itch to scratch...

I've studied ancient texts and know their mysteries;
I'm trained in tons of different ways to fight.
I follow tales and myths- I call them histories
that help me kill the creatures of the night.

The Nightmare's flaming hooves did not disquiet me;
I stalked and staked the Vampire in its den.
the Werewolf fought and flailed but could not bite me;
With me the Chupacabra met its end.

I find as each unnatural terror falls
I close a door on remnants of our past.
And 'tween their world and ours I'm building walls
that o'er the top and out of thought they're cast.

Perhaps the beasts I seek aren't all that rotten;
they hunt us just so they won't be forgotten.
